(52) Chapter: The soul of the believer and his likeness
Volume 2, Book 14, Number 703:
Abu 'Ubaidah said: I was told about Ibn 'Omar that he
said, "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)
said: 'Amongst the trees, there is a tree, whose leaves do not fall and is like
the faithful Muslim. Tell me what it is.' "He said, "The people mentioned
different kinds of desert trees. And I thought of the date-palm tree but I felt
shy to speak up. Then they said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, tell us what it is.’ He
said: ‘It is the blessed date-palm tree. It gives its produce every season by
the leave of its Lord.’" (i.e., every six months).

(55) Chapter: Manners and etiquette
Volume 2, Book 14, Number 728:
Abu Obeida reported
from Jabir that Abu Hurayra narrated that the the Prophet (PBUH)
said, "While a man was walking on the way he became extremely thirsty. The
he found a well. He went down into it, drank (of its water) and came out. Upon
leaving it, he saw a dog panting and eating moist earth out of thirst. Then the
man said, "This dog is suffering from the same state of thirst
as I did." So he descended into the well, filled up his slipper with
water, and holding it with his mouth, climbed up and watered the dog. So
Allah thanked him for that and forgave him." Then the people said, "O
Allah's Apostle! Is there a reward for us in serving the animals?" He
said, "There is a reward for serving any animate (living being)."
